10 Ways to Make Shoes Last
For some of us, shoes are more than an accessory - they are one of the ways we express our individuality. Some shoes are daring, some are practical and some look and cost nearly as much as works of art. How do we keep our favorites from fading with inevitable wear and tear? Here are 10 tips for keeping your favorite footwear as good as new: Frayed Laces: If you can't replace the laces, dip the ends in clear nail polish to get rid of the frays and to make them easier to lace. Scuffs: Try gently rubbing a baking soda paste against shoes to get rid of scuff marks. Shining Leather - Other than shoe polish, a thin layer of petroleum jelly is great for adding a glow to leather. Apply with a clean, soft cloth and be sure to wipe off any excess. Shined and Scented Leather - Spray furniture polish or lemon juice on shoes and buff with a soft cloth. Practical Scotchguard - Use a light coating of spray starch on new sneakers before wearing them to repel dirt. Sneaker Soles - Clean the soles and sides of sneakers with baking soda sprinkled on a sponge or washcloth. Shine Sealer - Spray hair spray on your shoes after polishing to make the effect last longer. Lotion Shine - Don't have anything but lotion handy? Dab a small amount on each shoe, rub in and buff. Salty Mess - Clean salt residue from your favorite leather or vinyl winter boots with a cloth dipped in an ? water, ? vinegar solution. Works on coats too. Smelly Feet - Sprinkle salt overnight or baking soda to control moisture and odors from sweating feet.
